Mighty Mints-Did you Know?
Comforting, healing and mighty properties belong to the many species of the mentha family! There is a great history of uses and literature dating back to ancient Greece, Rome and Egypt. Mint leaf was once exchanged as currency for trade as almost everyone had a need and use for mint! For the purpose of this blog, we will focus on uses, properties and fun facts about our two favorite mints- peppermint and spearmint.
Both of our chosen mints are helpful to manage indigestion, intestinal spasms, heartburn, pain and nausea. Both are helpful to calm and treat symptoms of stomach ulcers when either is consumed 3-4 times a day. Improved digestion occurs when consumed before bed and may promote a more restful nights sleep. Spearmint and peppermint are safe for inhalation and ingestion daily, as long as one is not allergic.
Peppermint ( latin: mentha piperita) is
- cooling, stimulating and refreshing! It increases mental clarity and when rubbed on the temples or pressure points helps to relieve headaches.
*effective to treat skin irritations and calm sunburn when diluted in a carrier oil or aloe vera gel.
*antibacterial and stops bacteria from multiplying making it effective to reduce bacteria that cause nasty odors. This is why toothpaste is often mint flavored and a drop or 2 mixed with cornstarch deodorizes shoes so well. - fun fact- in the late 1600’s, children were given candy in the shape of “Sheppard’s Crosses’ and flavored with peppermint to keep the children occupied during church services at Christmas- the treasured candy cane!
Spearmint ( latin: mentha spicata) is
- warming, soothing and calming. It promotes sleep and relaxation when rubbed on the temples or on pressure points.
*high in antioxidants that help to repair cells and protect against free radicals. These radicals cause cellular damage and expedite the aging process.
*natural anti-inflammatory properties help to manage pain
(especially arthritic) and swelling in the digestive tract.
*fun fact- woman who drank 2 cups of spearmint tea daily in the middle of their menstrual cycle experienced less male patterned hair growth…meaning growth of facial hair was delayed!
